Food insecurity describes circumstances where an individual or family doesn’t have predictable access to the quality and quantity of food for optimal health. In California, more than 10 percent of the population can be categorized as food insecure.

Food insecurity can be exacerbated by high living costs, which can leave the most vulnerable households without enough income to cover food, utilities, medicine, and other necessities. Job loss or illness can also contribute to food insecurity.

To combat food insecurity, California administers the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which provides families with money for groceries. Food banks and food pantries also support people facing temporary food insecurity.
